HONOR MILLBURN H. S. ALL-STATE MUSICIANS
14 Outstanding Student-Musicians Named to the Prestigious
New Jersey All-State Band, Orchestra and Chorus
Millburn H. S. student-musicians named to the prestigious New Jersey All-State Band, Orchestra and Chorus were honored by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders during its February 1, 2012, meeting held at the Hall of Records. The students were accompanied by John Leahey, Musical Director for the Millburn Public Schools (front row, far left) and Band Director Mindy Scheierman (back row, far left). (Newark, NJ) – The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored 14 Millburn High School student-musicians who were recently named to the prestigious and highly-selective New Jersey All-State Band, Orchestra and Chorus. The students were honored during the Board’s Wednesday, February 1, 2012, meeting held at the Hall of Records, when Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold of Livingston and Freeholder Leonard M. Luciano of West Caldwell presented them with the Board’s commendations.
The students named to the New Jersey All-State Band and Orchestra Winds, Brass and Percussion, which performs annually at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in February, are: Alex Brod, a freshman who has been studying clarinet since the age of 8 and plays both the E flat and B flat clarinets; Rahul Gangan, a junior percussionist; Amanda Kam, a sophomore flutist; Upas Narayan, a senior who has been playing the clarinet since the age of 8; Tackin Tarighian, a senior who has been playing an array of clarinets for 9 years; Matt Wolffe, a sophomore tubist; Maurice Wong, a sophomore who plays the B flat and contrabass clarinets; and James Yoon, a junior who plays the B flat clarinet.
The following students were named to the New Jersey All-State Orchestra, which performs at the NJEA Convention in Atlantic City and at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in November: William Krinsman, a senior who plays the bassoon and french horn; Michelle Lou, a sophomore cellist; senior clarinetist Upas Narayan, who was also named to the All-State Band; and Hannah Park, a junior who has studied violin from the age of 7.
The students named to the New Jersey All-State Chorus, which also performs at the NJEA Convention in Atlantic City and at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, are: sophomore tenor Samuel Gersho; junior tenor Anthony Joo; and junior soprano Victoria Nachevnik;
The audition and selection process was conducted by the New Jersey Music Educators Association (NJMEA), which is a federated State Unit of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), a voluntary, non-profit organization representing all phases of music education in schools, colleges, universities and teacher-education institutions.
The students were accompanied by John Leahey, Director of Music for the Millburn Public Schools, and Mindy Scheierman, Director of the high school band.
