GIRLS TENNIS TEAM
Board Congratulates New Jersey's #1 Team
2011 Group III State Champions and Winners of the Tournament of Champions
The Millburn H. S. Girls Tennis Team was honored by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders during its Wednesday, December 21, 2011, meeting held at the Hall of Records. The team, which finished undefeated as New Jersey's #1 girls tennis team, captured both the 2011 Group III State Championship and the Tournament of Champions. (Newark, NJ) – The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Millburn High School Girls Tennis Team for having won both the 2011 Group III State Championship and the 2011 Tournament of Champions. The presentations were made by Freeholders Leonard Luciano and Patricia Sebold during the Board’s Wednesday, December 21st, meeting at the Hall of Records when they congratulated the team for its “perfect season”, which included the compilation of an undefeated record of 28-0 and recognition as New Jersey’s #1 girls tennis team.
The Board’s commendations were presented to team representatives Alexandra Stone, Stefanie Chen-Schmidt and Patricia Chou, who were accompanied by Head Coach Bill Wickenheisser and Millburn H. S. Athletic Director Dr. Ted D’Alessio.
In this year’s state tournament, the team first defeated Colonia High School (5-0), then Rahway High School (5-0), then Warren Hills High School (5-0) and then Mendham High School (5-0) to win the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 Sectional Championship for the sixth consecutive year and 29th time overall, before going on to defeat Moorestown High School (4-1) and then Montville High School (5-0) to capture the Group 3 State Championship for the sixth consecutive year, and its 17th title overall. The team then competed in the 2011 Tournament of Champions (TOC) where it first defeated Bridgewater Raritan High School, the Group 4 State Champions, 5-0, and then Red Bank Catholic High School, 4-1, in the Championship Game, to capture the program’s fifth TOC title.
The team also captured the Essex County Championship for the 7th consecutive year, as well as the Super Essex Conference (American Division) Championship.
The 2011 Millburn High School Girls Tennis Team is comprised of the following members: Seniors Jenna Berkenkamp, Alexandra Gray, Carolyn Rauch, Julia Schaevitz, Alexandra Stone and Shirley Zhang; Juniors Molly Blevins, Patricia Chau, Lauren Cohen, Rebecca Mandel and Lexie Tonelli; Sophomores Stephanie Chen Schmidt, Maddie Stearns, Sandy Xie and April Liu; and Freshman Jane Bary.
